Good Friday morning!! May is melanoma cancer awareness month. This is when I like to get on my soapbox and have a stern talk with you all. I thought about what I wanted to say that would make you never want to leave the house without sunscreen on. I decided to share my story with you again......
In January of 2006, my doctor noticed that a mole on my abdomen was looking ugly. He biopsied it and the results came back as cutaneous melanoma. A month later, it was removed using the Mohs procedure. We were told it was gone, no further treatment needed.
Almost 2 years later in December 2007, I found a lump in my left armpit. Turned out the melanoma had returned and had spread to my lymph nodes. My Oncologist told us that the FDA approved treatment for metastatic melanoma has a 30% five-year survival rate, but there was a clinical trial that was having a 60% success rate - not great but still much better. So I had surgery to remove the lymph nodes and 4 months of grueling experimental chemotherapy ending in May 2008, it looked like the cancer might be gone.
In December 2008, a routine scan showed 11 tumors in my brain - one tumor was the size of a tangerine. I underwent the Gamma Knife radiation procedure and 8 months of weekly chemotherapy, ending in August 2009.
I am now participating in a Melanoma Vaccine program that is showing some promise. I don't have any active tumors now, the hope is that the vaccine will teach my immune system to fight any stray melanoma cells that could be lurking in my body.
This is a cancer that can be prevented. It is caused from too much sun on your skin. When I was in High School we layed out in the sun for hours without any sunscreen because we just didn't know then that sunscreen is a must!
I do not want anyone else to go through what I have been through. Praise God I am healed! I thank God daily for my family and friends that got me through two really tough years.
So please go and get your skin checked yearly by your doctor and please wear sunscreen everyday. Having a tanned body is not worth it. If you want a tan.....put on some self tanner. Okay....time to step off my soapbox. :)
Thank you again Gina Cosio and little Ethan for all the clothes for Tyler!! So adorable!!
Prayer requests....Ron-final stages of cancer, peace.....Wayne-cancer........some marriages that are going through rough times, strength.
Psalms 46 verse 1: God is our refuge and strength, a tested help in times of trouble.
Have an awesome day everyone!! Today is another gift from God and He is so Good!
